Lupe is a Muslim who grew up in Chicago. In this song he employs an extended metaphor which parallels the similarities between different religions and how they all strive for peace against the American military industrial complex and and racial violence of inner cities. Through figurative language he demonstrates the similarities between the Iraq war and gang wars which plague American cities stating that both have innocent people dying for the wrong reasons. He quotes the Quran, says not all Muslims are terrorists, tries to show the common ground between all religions and races, and highlights the senselessness of violence. He also argues a feminist position, in that, the Hijab is not a symbol of oppression but of respect thus challenging negative stereotypes about women and Islam.
