Queen Latifah – U.N.I.T.Y.

U.N.I.T.Y is one of the first major rap songs to critique the Hip-Hop industry’s culture of misogyny and violence against women. She challenges overt-masculinity and sates, it is easy to be a trigger pulling gangster, but better to stand up for all people in need by promoting equality and not recreating the institutional violence of the police state. It has a strong feminist stance which encourages women to speak out against sexism. She argues that sexism and domestic violence are not natural and that such arguments divide the genders thus allowing everyone to be conquered by oppressive forces such as consumerism and the police state which prey on Black communities due to racial inequalities.
