Tupac – Hold Ya Head Up

This song was one of Tupac’s major hits which sought to question his role in a patriarchal society and Hip-hop’s misogynistic culture. This song represents a feminist position, and Tupac lays the blame at the feet of men and male rappers for the historical poor treatment of women. He uses allusion and religious allegory to question the ways of the past and presents a new hope that in the future the genders can unite to fight the real causes of pain in Black communities. These causes stem from the historical oppression and racial exploitation of African American’s which has generated the Black on Black crime which domestic violence is a symptom of due to poverty, deprivation, lack of education and opportunity, as well as the detrimental impacts of drugs and alcohol on already vulnerable communities. He employs realist imagery, emotive language, assonance, simile, and metaphor to deliver his inspirational message.
