This song looks at the good and the bad in the artists life. It covers family drug addiction, as well as socio-economic issues related to the 1980’s such as black poverty. He thanks the government agencies which helped raise him and takes a moment to think about all the positive influences on his life which allowed him to rise up, but still shows an awareness for the dark racist history of America which led to much of this suffering.
