Bo Burnham – Art Is Dead

This song is postmodern / meta fictional in its self critique and debasement of the artistic process and the artist. Firstly, he draws attention to the way in which he is addicted to attention which is quite childish and immature. Then he shows how this addiction is sanctioned by society and encouraged as people love to worship celebrities which is hypocritical and can be dangerous. They are after all wearing metaphorical make up which hides their true identity. The idea that ‘Art is Dead’ comes from the fact that he is addicted to attention, not artistic expression and he therefore does art for the wrong reasons – for fame and material wealth – while conforming to profit seeking like a corporate entity instead of an expressive individual. It is also a play on Nietzsche’s ‘God is Dead’. In conclusion he critiques the society which creates ‘fake’ artists like himself and says there are more needy causes which go unaided.
