This song uses irony and satire to critique modern pop music, which is more of a product designed to exploit inherent human and societal weaknesses rather than convey a unique artistic experience. Burnham takes on the persona of an artist who uses hollow empty lyrics to sell records and exploits the formulaic nature of modern pop music. He also critiques the listening public who are ‘dumb enough’ to buy such music. He alludes to how pop music over-sexulaises teenagers and uses sex to sell product without any ethical considerations for the public’s men tal health. The mass media networks which profit and create these works are mostly to blame through artists are often aware of the scam too. When so much music conforms to these false representation of love and intimacy it is easy to see how body issues and low self-esteem are common in the developed world as well as the eating disorders which accompany them.
