This song argues that in ‘the hood’ people are focused on poverty and trying to survive so they have little time for the philosophy of socialism and democracy which can help them see the racial oppression and exploitation which has led to their situation. He argues that people in power get away with murder because of public ignorance which is created by the system. If you try and change the system; it will change you. He extends this to America’s plutocratic economic imperialism in Latin America which makes the third world sell themselves cheap for American profits. He states that America keeps the third world poor through neo-colonial control, ‘othering’ of different cultures, corporate interests, capitalist ideologies, political and military interventions and right-wing neo-liberal policies. He argues this point out of love for his people not hatred for others stating this is a class issue not a race issue through politicians misrepresent it through mass media.
