This song is a feminist rebuttal to much of the misogynistic Hip-Hop which has come to be seen as the norm; however, that description could apply to Arcee as a performer generally. In Anchors she describes the reality for women who must suffer the shortfalls of men and make excuses for their actions all the while being fed ‘pin-ups’ like George Clooney and Brad Pitt by the media, as if all men fit this mold. She tells women to want more and know they can do better and that settling for less will damage their mental health. This song has strong themes of female empowerment as well as a critique of the societal norms and expectations which devalue women while endorsing hyper-masculinity.
