The links between Maori Waiata and Hip-Hop are deeply rooted in two cultures which value the spoken word and the power of the speaker. I have sadly not had time to explore this link further (yet!) but would love for someone to add their thoughts to the mix in preparation for what will be a great teaching resource. Here is a beautiful interview with a Waitata legend Opetaia Foa’i from Radio New Zealand. It discusses his role in the making of the music for Disney’s Moana; but, the similarities between Hip-Hop and Waitata were what struck me most. I have included a link to a brief description of what Waiata is for those curious to know more.
